Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Police in Kabalagala arrested two Eritrean nationals in connection with the death of their compatriot during an altercation at a bar. The victim, Hannibal Tewelde, 30, an Eritrean refugee residing in Lukuli area, Makindye Division, was fatally injured on the evening of Monday, July 9, 2024.

Patrick Onyango, spokesman for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, identified the suspects as Siem Fustem and Henok Foto, both Eritrean refugees from the same locality. They are currently detained at Katwe Police Station on charges of murder.

Initial police investigations reveal that the incident occurred at My Place bar, located at AD Plaza apartment on Kibuli Road.

The trio are said to have been drinking when a dispute broke out which led to Tewelde being hit on the head with a beer bottle, causing him to collapse.

“The suspects took the deceased to Nsambya Hospital for medical attention. Upon arrival, he was declared dead. The case was reported at Kabalagala Police Station,” Onyango said.

Police detectives from the Kabalagala homicide unit visited the scene and recorded statements from relevant witnesses.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Mulago town morgue for an autopsy.

According to the police’s annual crime report for 2023, 4,366 cases of murder were documented, with an average of 12 deaths per day. The report highlights that assaults, mob action and strangulations were the main causes of these deaths.
