Egypt’s wheat imports up 28.3% in H1 2024

Egypt has increased its wheat imports by 28.3% in the first half of 2024, an unnamed government official told Asharq Business.

Wheat imports reached 6.8 million tonnes in the first six months of this year, compared with 5.3 million tonnes in the same period of 2023, the source said.

This increase is attributed to the higher number of refugees in the country recently, which boosted local wheat consumption, a trader said, adding that wheat imports grew mainly due to the availability of the dollar in banks over the past three months.
