Euro 2024: Watkins’ last-minute goal sends England through to Spain in final

England have qualified for the final of Euro 2024.

Ollie Watkins scored a late winner as the Three Lions defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final at the BVB Stadium on Wednesday.

England had to come from a goal down to secure another place in the final, with Harry Kane’s penalty cancelling out Xavi Simmons’ early goal before Watkins became England’s hero on the night.

Simmons gave the Netherlands the lead in the seventh minute. The midfielder stole the ball from Declan Rice before unleashing an unstoppable shot from the edge of the area to make it 1-0.

England had come from behind on multiple occasions during the tournament. Once again, the team called on muscle memory against the Oranje and earned a penalty awarded by VAR for a foul on Kane.

The Bayern Munich striker took advantage of the shot to score and restore parity in the 18th minute.

The Lions increased the pressure afterwards, with Foden having two chances, but the Manchester City striker’s shot was saved on the line by Dutchman Denzel Dumfries, while another effort from outside the area hit the post.

The Netherlands had the first chances of the second half after the hour mark. Jordan Pickford saved Virgil van Dijk’s low shot from a corner, while Dumfries headed over the bar from the resulting corner. Simmons also missed a shot that could have been easily saved, while Saka had a goal ruled out for offside at the other end as both teams searched for the winner.

England opened the scoring in added time through substitute Watkins. The Aston Villa striker received a pass from Cole Palmer, beat Stefan de Vrij and fired a low, powerful shot into the far corner, out of the keeper’s reach, to give England the win.

England, finalists in the last edition of the competition, will play in two consecutive Euro finals.

On Sunday they will face Spain at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
