Mason Greenwood: Lazio not giving up on signing Manchester United striker – Manchester United news and transfers

Lazio president Claudio Lotito is keen to sign Mason Greenwood.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Marseille’s negotiations with Manchester United for Greenwood were close to completion, but backlash from fans and political figures complicated the deal.

Marseille ultras have openly opposed Greenwood’s arrival, citing his past legal troubles.

Greenwood was charged with attempted rape and assault in January 2022, leading to his suspension from United.

Although the charges were dropped in 2023, the controversy has persisted, fuelling outrage among Marseille ultras, who issued a statement condemning the transfer, saying it would irreparably damage the club’s values and their passion for it.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan echoed this sentiment and urged club president Pablo Longoria to cancel the deal.

The controversy has presented an opportunity for Lazio, and Lotito is hopeful that Marseille’s withdrawal will allow his club to intervene.

The Ligue 1 club had reportedly offered €27m, a figure later increased to €30m, but unresolved parameters relating to future resale percentages stalled the deal.

This impasse, coupled with the backlash, has kept Greenwood at United for now.

Despite the uproar from the ultras, new Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi has expressed his support for Greenwood, calling him a champion and criticising those who judge the player without knowing the full story.

However, Longoria’s recent comments to RMC Sport, emphasising the club’s commitment to values, hint at a possible reversal in their pursuit of the player.

Lotito remains willing to make an improved offer for Greenwood, needing to increase its offer of €20m plus 50% of the future resale to at least €25m.

Greenwood is keen to sort out his future on Friday, leaving the door open for Lazio to take advantage of the situation.

As the transfer saga unfolds, Lazio could also explore other attacking options. Names such as Rennes winger Edon Zhegrova and Barcelona winger Vitor Roque have been mentioned as potential targets.

Meanwhile, Lazio are also grappling with potential exits, with Partizan Belgrade’s Bazdar and Nacional Montevideo showing interest in Vecino, who could leave in 2025.
